I was just doing some research on marketing and found a company that does broadcasts in elevators. I would give quite a bit to be in charge of the programming for that show! Man, imagine peoples’ faces if you actually put some nice thoughts, or interesting jokes on that screen, instead of news? If you made these people a bit happier, rather than showing them the frigging weather report with an attached ad for umbrellas! I’m sure it’s all very suitable to show news and weather forecasts to CEO:s, but come on, you gotta live!!! (I can think of a number of unsuitable jokes to put on that screen as well, just so as to get reactions out of people…maybe they’d actually start talking to each other if you shocked them enough, or put enough subliminal messages in there???)
Elevators = incredible opportunities, or supreme disasters, depending on whom you end up with. There are more interesting situations that can happen in an elevator than just about anywhere else, simply because people are forced together with people whom they normally don’t speak to. Sometimes this leads to a whole new world opening up when two souls find one other. Sometimes it leads to extremely comedic situations when two souls who greatly disagree with one another get stuck together – you can tell someone to fuck off, of course, and they might get the hint, but they won’t get very far physically…you are still stuck together. This = comedy.
Sometimes I believe people need to be stuck together to open their eyes to really experience one another. How many people in your life pass you by without you truly experiencing them? Even the people you consider friends, or valued colleagues? When was the last time you paid attention? Truly looked at them, truly listened to them?
Sometimes I think arguing people should be stuck together till they move beyond the point of arguing…and onto more pleasant things…
Who would you like to get stuck in an elevator with? What friend or colleague do you really need to sit down and talk to? What mentor would you really like to ask a million questions? What part of you would you really need to get stuck with? What lover do you really need to pay some attention to?
Whom would you truly want to look deep into the eyes and explore…??? Go on, just pick up the phone, dial the number and ask them!!! We would all love to get that phone call from the right person, wouldn’t we? And if you don’t dial, what will you regret?..
Carpe Diem!
I know – I’m using the same photo as yesterday, but there’s a point here!!!
As a frequent elevator user (I use a wheelchair, so stairs would be tough,) I think your idea is great. Very clever, and it’s also very human, which a lot of marketing is not.
One question, though. All the time I hear people complain about how advertising is *everywhere* (and it really is nowadays–check out my blog!
. Do you think your idea will alleviate that feeling? If not, what can we do about it?
Well, someone is already doing it – and they are seemingly making the big bucks and expanding rapidly.
Personally I find it weird having technology all around me, it makes me feel like they are trying to take my attention away from life, especially when they are just trying to sell me things. However, there is a difference if you first offer quality and then add one commercial quickly, or if the commercial offers something I value – like a short story that’s performed nicely, only to introduce the product in the end.
I think we have to limit our advertising, but when it is done well, it can be a lot of fun.
